How to Transfer a Car Title in Florida

Car titles are the most talked-about documents when it comes to car ownership, and rightly so. The title determines the legal ownership of a car and all of its history. Without that title, you can’t lay claim to a car or buy/sell it at the best price possible. Now, you may have heard of car titles before but, car title transfer takes it up a notch.

While a car title is simply a document containing all the essential information about your car, a car title transfer is a process that makes that information movable and transferable. How does that work? Let’s find out!

Confirm the existence of a title

The first and most important thing to do is to confirm the legitimacy of the current car title. During the handover of a car after purchase, all the documents that relate to the car must be presented. The most important of all these documents is the car title because it shows all the details and history of the car. If the car title presented is not legitimate, it defeats the entire purpose of applying for a title transfer. However, if you’ve confirmed the legitimacy of the car title, you can move on to the next step of the title transfer.

Complete your checklist

To get a car title transferred for a car that you bought you need to have the following;

  • Original car title document (no duplicates not scanned copies).

  • The cost of sale, name, and address of the new & old owner to be included in the car title with the date and signature of the transaction.

  • Completed and notarized bill of sale.

  • Lien satisfaction document for liened cars.

  • Completed notice of sale

  • Completed checks for VIN and Odometer reading

  • Vehicle Insurance

  • Buyer’s driver's license

  • Other associated fees like $225 for a license plate and $2 per lien, among other fees.

For a car that you were given, as a gift, you need to get the documents listed above except all the sales-related documents. While for a car you were given as an inheritance, you need to include a copy of the will and, in certain cases, the death certificate of the previous owner to cover all legal grounds for verification.

After securing these documents and details, you can then proceed to apply for a title transfer.

Apply for, and complete, the transfer application

With a complete checklist of all the required documents and transfer details, you can apply for a title transfer at the Florida Highway Safety Motors and Vehicles (FLHSMV). The process will have the information on the current car title registered and updated to reflect your ownership.
