Basics of Transferring Title From Out-of-State

If you live outside the state of Florida and need to register your car, there are a few things you’ll need to know, and like many good things, it comes in threes.

There are three basic steps to registering your car in Florida. One: Your license plate. Speaking of “one”, there is only one license plate required to be on your car (the rear bumper) in Florida. Two: The registration sticker and that gets placed on the upper right corner of your license plate. Three: The registration card. This card displays information about the car itself. This includes the vehicle’s legal owner. This card should always be kept in an accessible spot in your car.

If you live in Florida, you need a Florida plate to legally drive your car there. You can be considered are resident if you are a Florida student, or you have a child that is enrolled in a school in Florida. If you have a lease agreement or own a home in the state, or if you are employed in Florida, you can also be considered a resident. Even if you are not considered a resident, you can still drive a car in Florida that is registered in another state.

To register your vehicle, you’ll need the current title, or “pink slip”, Florida insurance card, and a passport or ID. You need the title to prove you own the car. If the car was gifted to you, or you purchased it from an owner in another state, you’ll need a notarized bill of sale if you do not have the title. The insurance card is provided to you by your auto insurance carrier. Most providers are able to send proof of insurance directly to the DMV when necessary.

It only takes a few (well three) things to properly register your car in Florida. We are here to help you with the process, so you can get on the road and start enjoying the ride.
